How did CROCS come about?
Love it or hate it, Crocs is considered a fashion icon and has different strong collaborations with brands such as Balenciaga, Bad Bunny, Liberty London, Bretman Rock and even Benefit Cosmetics. If in 2010 Time magazine chose it as “one of the 50 Worst Inventions of all Time,” today Crocs is the industry’s sales leader. Let’s learn more about the history of the brand?
Crocs was founded in 2002 by three sailing friends who were looking for the perfect footwear for use on a boat: comfortable, non-slip and waterproof. In fact, the shoe gets its name from its crocodile-like appearance.
The shoe was so comfortable, hygienic, and durable that it quickly sold out in retail stores — despite disagreements over its design. See: In 2002, Crocs sold 200 pairs of sandals, and by 2017, 300 million people had bought at least one pair!
Celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Natalie Dormer are fans of the shoes. Prince George was even spotted wearing a pair of Crocs, which eventually saw a 1,500% increase in sales.
What was a great strength of Crocs quickly became a weakness. Made of durable materials, people don’t need new sandals, just because old ones don’t wear out. Soon, sales plummeted. Later, in addition to collaborating with other brands and designers, the company created new styles — very different from the classic sandal.
So, do you have a pair of Crocs that you call your own, or would you rather let this trend pass?
