Anyone who has ever tried running around the office all day in pointy heels can attest to the fact that purely stylistic roadside calls go out of fashion, and quickly. Thankfully, you don’t have to sacrifice style for function. There are many very fashionable shoes that don’t leave you teetering toward the edge of the pain threshold at the end of the day.

Do you still want to look like the boss, but also be comfortable? It’s time to embrace the wonderful world of apartments. Of course, your flip-flops and TOMS are still no good, but there are other ways to rock out on flats and still look professional.

1. Knowing the Difference

There’s a difference between your Sunday brunch apartment and your office apartment. While those you use for the office may transition to Sunday brunch, it’s unlikely the other way around. Your office apartment needs to have a certain authority that those floral print ballet flats don’t. Sure, they’re cute, but they don’t say, “I’m serious about that deadline.” You need an apartment with a purpose. Polishing, precision.

2. Open-Toe Rule of Thumb

Are you allowed to wear open-toe shoes in the office? A lot depends on your office culture, but in most office environments, the safe answer is no. Not even peep toes. Not even a fresh pedicure.

3. What about exposed heels?

This one is tricky, but here’s an easy way to do it: If the show doesn’t have ankle support, like a clog, don’t wear it. If it has ankle or heel straps, like braces, then you’re happy.

4. Trust Your Gut

That little, squeaky voice inside you: Listen to it. It’s telling you not to cut your bangs, or to drop French in high school because a second language will be useful in the future. This is true in two ways. So if it tells you that a pair of flats isn’t suitable for work, that’s probably the right choice. You of all people know what is expected of you in your workplace — or you should.

There are plenty of options to showcase your unique style while still fitting perfectly in the office. Get them and love them. Save the sexy and chic look for Saturday night or the office Christmas party.
